Summary:
The Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to physician leadership and excellence in health care. The organization is comprised of more than 6,000 physicians and surgeons. LACMA provides various services to its members, including legislative advocacy, economic advocacy, continuing medical education programs, political action programs, and practice management tools and services to help physicians service the community at large. LACMA works in conjunction with the California Medical Association (CMA) to protect physician interests at the state level.
Job Function:
The Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA) is looking for a highly skilled and motivated professional to work at the grassroots level in conjunction with various marketing initiatives and organization leadership, to promote awareness of LACMA’s and CMA’s mission and legislative efforts, for the purpose of membership recruitment and retention.
In addition, the individual will serve as the administrator for the newly implemented air quality program and committee at LACMA.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Active regional membership recruitment and retention through continuous aggressive and proactive grassroots outreach efforts. Conveys the value of LACMA and CMA membership by meeting with physicians and their staff to inform them about activities, programs and member benefits, and to facilitate contact with a Society resource who can answer questions or solve problems.
- Communicate and meet with hospital coordinators and other relevant medical staff to promote and ensure local awareness of the LACMA’s activities and develop a harmonious working relationship.
- Delivers feedback and results of interactions with physicians, practice administrators, and other relevant medical staff for proper tracking of efforts and necessary reporting as defined by the membership department.
- Develops contact lists and rosters of medical staff contacts and hospitals practices in assigned areas.
- Provides focused grassroots marketing related communications materials and follow-ups to hospital medical staff, practice administrators, and local physicians, among others.
- Maintain understanding of current and emerging health care issues (legislative, regulatory, managed care, etc.) at the national, local and state levels, and communicate this information with appropriate physicians and staff.
- Communicate with LACMA staff concerning market developments, physician needs, and interactions with practice administrators, etc.
- Promote LACMA’s practice management services and educational offerings. Assist in determining regional need for potential educational seminars.
- Assist in determining need of appropriate marketing materials.
- Miscellaneous membership duties as assigned.
Air Quality Program Responsibilities:
- Create, nurture and maintain an active committee of at least 6 physicians dedicated to addressing air quality issues by advocating with local and state legislators.
- Assist physicians with advocacy issues by: preparing testimony, talking points, presentations, conducting research.
- Under guidance from committee, submit at least five well-considered resolution to the annual California Medical Association’s House of Delegates meeting.
- Research relevant statistics and studies on the effects of air pollution within Los Angeles County, the state of California and the nation along with existing and proposed legislation that affects air quality locally, statewide and nationally.
- Work with Government Affairs to develop legislative agenda for better air quality and health for all in 2011.
- Create an educational brochure with an emphasis on policy in a variety of languages so that physicians and community groups can educate patients and community-at-large.
- Develop, coordinate, and conduct CME events for physicians related to air quality.
- Develop and sustain presence at statewide physician conferences.
- Become an expert on local, state and national legislation relating to air quality and empower physicians to become experts.
- Collaborate with other clean air and Hewlett Foundation grantees to find out what they are doing in this area and build on their success.
- Promote air quality committee’s effort and successes via website, at Board meetings, e-newsletter and through Southern California Physician magazine.
- Promote educational opportunities for physicians to attend or serve as panel speakers, etc.
- Promote a “Speakers Bureau” of physicians who can speak at schools, colleges, churches, and local meetings about the importance of good air quality.
- Oversee program budget and maintain records
- Conduct training for any air quality related interns, volunteers or subcontracted employees.
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Background in government relations or healthcare related profession preferred.
- At least five years professional experience required.
Skills:
- Excellent critical thinking, customer service and organizational skills.
- Excellent communications skills (written, verbal and listening).
- Strong knowledge of Los Angeles County geography.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Fluency Spanish, Chinese, or Korean preferred.
- Must be goal oriented.
- Ability to work independently, without daily supervision.
- Ability to represent LACMA and CMA in a professional and ethical manner.
- Ability to react to change in a productive manner and handle tasks as assigned.
- Knowledge of current political climate in LA County a plus.
Other Requirements:
- Occasional evening attendance at LACMA functions is required
- Occasional overnight travel is necessary. Current driver’s license
Compensation and Benefits:
The Los Angeles County Medical Association offers competitive salary and benefits. The salary range for this position will be commensurate with experience. The Association provides employer-paid benefits for health, dental, vision and life insurance. A 401 (k) retirement plan is available with matching contributions paid by the employer up to specified limits.
